Before there was Elon Musk, there was William Crapo Durant. It’s highly unlikely that Musk, one of the world’s richest people, will die penniless, but in other respects he and Durant have a lot in common. One thing I found out is that the world is not always kind to visionaries with self-control issues. Durant flamed out at G.M. In contrast, the prudent organization man who eventually succeeded him, Alfred Sloan, went from success to success.

CNN —SpaceX is once again set to fly its gargantuan Starship rocket — the most powerful launch vehicle ever constructed — after federal regulators approved the company’s plans for a third test flight. This test flight comes after two attempts to get the massive Starship vehicle to orbital speeds in 2023 ended in explosions, with the spacecraft and booster erupting into flames before reaching their intended landing sites. What success looks like for SpaceXMusk has indicated that he believes Starship has a high chance of successfully completing this third test flight. “Certainly the third flight is a much better rocket than flights one or two.”Musk said before the last Starship test flight in November that the vehicle had about a 50% chance of success. After the first and second Starship test flights ended in explosions, the company immediately sought to frame these mishaps as successes.

Audience Snapshot: Four Years After Shutdown, a Mixed Recovery
  + stars: | 2024-03-12 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The pandemic brought live events and big gatherings to a halt, silencing orchestras, shutting museums and movie theaters and leaving sports teams playing to empty stadiums dotted with cardboard cutouts. Now, four years later, audiences are coming back, but the recovery has been uneven. Here is a snapshot of where things stand now:Broadway audiences are still down 17 percent from prepandemic levels. Box office grosses are down, too: Broadway shows have grossed $1.2 billion so far this season, 14 percent below the level in early March of 2020. The industry is looking with some trepidation toward next month, when a large crop of new shows is set to open.

That pushed Biden's count past 1,968 for a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August, where his nomination will be made official. Former President Donald Trump is expected to clinch the Republican nomination shortly. Biden, who mounted his first bid for president 37 years ago, did not face any serious Democratic challengers to his run for reelection at age 81. Already the oldest-ever American president, Biden would be 86 if he served out the entirety of a second term. “I sure feel confident.”Biden first ran for the Democratic nomination ahead of the 1988 presidential election, but flamed out when it emerged he had plagiarized speeches.

The Orioles have been mediocre — or straight-up awful — throughout most of Angelos’ ownership. The new owner, Rubenstein, is a Baltimore native and co-founder of The Carlyle Group, a Washington, DC-based private equity giant. If the sale is approved, Rubenstein will become the controlling partner in the ownership group, the key decision-maker. After the 94-year-old Angelos dies, the Rubenstein group will own all 100% of the club. The Orioles’ $1.7 billion valuation is nearly triple what the team was worth in 2014, according to Forbes.

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

But on the eve of the caucuses, DeSantis is on the brink in a state where he’s banked his entire campaign. “This House Republican majority is united,” Rep. Mike Johnson said Tuesday night after becoming the conference’s fourth speaker nominee – and the second nominee in the course of a single day. Johnson, who was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference, made a pitch over the weekend as a “consensus candidate” for speaker. If he can get to 217, a heavy lift in a slim Republican majority of only 221 lawmakers, Johnson will become the most inexperienced speaker in recent memory. And a government funding fight that got House Republicans into the speaker mess is slated to again rear its head with a Nov. 17 deadline to pass spending bills or kick the can down the road. 2, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a fellow Louisianan who was himself denied the speakership just weeks ago.

House Republicans unanimously voted to elect Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker on Wednesday in a stunning turnaround that came more than three weeks into a standoff that descended the chamber into a crisis of its own creation. Johnson, an unlikely candidate for speaker just weeks ago, was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference. And by the evening, lawmakers spoke of a Johnson speakership as if it were all-but guaranteed. House Republicans sprung to their feet as House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik nominated Johnson for the speakership ahead of the vote on Wednesday, delivering a standing ovation as chants of “Mike” rang out. “Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the people’s House,” Stefanik said.

Still, the stock market impact left some food manufacturers "trembling," said John Plassard, senior investment specialist at Nestle investor Mirabaud Group. Nvidia shares have tumbled 10% this month, with the stock feeling what traders call the "September effect". That plunge has wiped just under $180 billion off the semiconductor giant's market capitalization. Nvidia has still been the S&P 500's best performer this year, surging 189% thanks to the rise of AI and ChatGPT. Shares have tumbled 10% since August 31, wiping $176 billion off the chipmaker's total market capitalization, according to data from Refinitiv. MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) — Felix Rosenqvist will end his tenure with Arrow McLaren Racing by starting from the pole in the IndyCar Series season finale at Laguna Seca. Rosenqvist won the only two poles of the season for McLaren, which is still seeking its first win of the season from its three-driver lineup headed into Sunday's finale. Rosenqvist announced earlier this week that he's moving to Meyer Shank Racing next season; McLaren said David Malukas will replace him next year. In the end, Palou decided last month he wasn't going to McLaren at all, too late for the team to retain Rosenqvist. Ericsson, who is in his fourth season with Ganassi, won the Indianapolis 500 last year and had been lobbying since for a better contract.

A Dishy Tell-All About Emily Weiss’s Glossier

GLOSSY: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss’s Glossier, by Marisa MeltzerA Glossier brick and mortar opened in my neighborhood last fall, and because that neighborhood is Williamsburg, I could comfortably declare it to be the brand’s time of death. Here lies Glossier, the millennial pink tombstone’s black etching would read, makeup for pretty people. That the Williamsburg Glossier is neighbored by retail stores for Parachute (bedding), Mejuri (jewelry) and Warby Parker (glasses) does not feel coincidental; all the formerly online-only direct-to-consumer brands are arranged on North Sixth Street in a neat little row. But when the first permanent Glossier showroom opened in SoHo in 2016, it was the cool girl’s place to go after work. Its founder, Emily Weiss, remains the star student in a class of girl bosses who have either imploded or flamed out.

Tiny tech bank defies US massacre of the minnows

One example is $1 billion Live Oak Bancshares (LOB.N), which flouts many preconceptions about what it means to be a tiny U.S. bank. But if those failures demonstrated that rapid growth brings escalating risk, Live Oak is a counterexample. Because of the way that programme is structured, around 40% of Live Oak’s lending carries a government guarantee. The company spun out its cloud-based banking software division nCino (NCNO.O) in 2014; that firm is now worth $2.8 billion, more than twice Live Oak’s value. That more earthly valuation might reflect Live Oak’s biggest risk: that it starts to look more like the rest of the pack.

On Tuesday, the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Coinbase, America’s largest crypto exchange, for allegedly acting as an unregistered broker. “Since at least 2019, Coinbase has made billions of dollars unlawfully facilitating the buying and selling of crypto asset securities,” the SEC said in a press release. The Coinbase lawsuit comes on the heels of a similar SEC complaint against Binance, which is by far the world’s biggest crypto exchange. Since then, digital asset prices have tanked and regulators have stepped up their scrutiny of the industry. “It should get crypto closer to final rules of the road regardless of how the judge rules.”

Florida lawmakers sent DeSantis a bill that would let him stay governor while running for president. "I don't think we have seen a six-month stretch that has ever been this productive in the history of our state," DeSantis said at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee on Friday.
